In urban environments, traffic noise and information overload constantly expose residents to dense auditory stimuli. This not only causes sensory fatigue but also gradually diminishes individuals’ autonomous perception of auditory experiences. Centered on the core issue of “sensory subjectivity,” this research constructs a data-driven adaptive interactive soundscape system through techno-artistic practice. It explores how real-time urban data, physical trace generation, and interactive design can respond to perceptual pressures under information overload, while reawakening individuals’ awareness of their sonic environment.
This installation primarily utilizes real-time traffic flow data from Tainan City (Transport Data eXchange) as its environmental input. Through a data–physical–perceptual translation chain—real-time traffic data → physical trace generation → infrared sensor reading → soundscape output—and incorporating audience intervention, the system achieves adaptive transitions among three soundscape states: Chaos, Transition, and Silence. By emphasizing the weight of human intervention, it invites participants to influence the sonic expression through bodily actions, thereby creating opportunities to rediscover their own auditory experiences.
Through the creative process, this study finds that cross-domain translation not only transforms abstract traffic data into perceptible soundscapes but, more importantly, creates an intervenable perceptual field. Rather than aiming to “solve” the noise problem, this work critically questions how individuals can reclaim auditory autonomy through interaction in technologically mediated urban life. The Silence state is not a complete absence of sound; instead, it retains subtle white noise resembling everyday environments, allowing participants to sense and perceive on their own. Through public exhibitions, this installation seeks to heighten viewers’ perceptual sensitivity to urban sound environments.
