漢斯‧小霍爾班出身於德國,長年定居於瑞士巴賽爾,最後卻是在英國將自身的藝術生涯推至高峰。小霍爾班以肖像畫著長,早年也製作了不少的版畫。小霍爾班善於在繪畫中隱藏符號,眾所皆知的〈大使〉一圖中的變形骷髏,象徵著死亡意義,小霍爾班著名的系列版畫,便是探討生命無常的「死亡之舞」。繪畫中除了表達著死亡意涵外,對當時社會下政治、宗教的嘲諷更顯現於版畫中。
本文以小霍爾班三個「死亡之舞」系列中最知名的《大死亡之舞》為主要探討,同時也追溯至中世紀「死亡之舞」的發展,提出在十三世紀到十七世紀間發生了一種奇異的社會現象「舞蹈狂熱」,「舞蹈狂熱」體現了人們對生活的恐懼,為了撫慰人心與勸誡生命的珍貴,進而發展出不論身分階級,死亡之前人人平等的「死亡之舞」。本研究亦對小霍爾班之前的「死亡之舞」教堂壁畫進行整理,並梳理在小霍爾班之後的十六、十七世紀對《大死亡之舞》進行仿效的作品。
Hans Holbein the younger was born in Germany, he has lived in Basel, Switzerland for a long period of time, however, he reached his career of art to climax in England. Holbein is most known for his portraits; he also made a great number of woodcuts in his early years. Holbein was good at having hidden symbols in his paints; the skull in “The Ambassadors” painted in distorted perspective signified death. Holbein’s woodcuts “The Dance of Death” talks about the inconstancy of life. The images represent the meaning of death, also shows the aspect of criticizing the politics and the pope under the society.
The article chooses “The Great Dance of Death” from the three series of “The Dance of Death” as mainly discussion. Also dated back to the evolvement of The Dance of Death at Middle Age, mentions about the particular phenomenon “Dancing Mania” happened in between 13th to 17th century. Dancing Mania shows people’s fears for life, to comfort people’s mind and urge the value of life, “The dance of Death” was develop - everyone was equal despite the social hierarchy. This study has a collect of Holbein’s fresco painting of The Dance of Death and reviews his works that emulated to The Great Dance of Death later at 16th-17th century.
