In the era of globalization, transnational marriages become a common phenomenon. Many new-residents have married to Taiwan from afar. By the end of 2020, they comprised a population about 550,000. Among these foreign spouses, Vietnamese is the majority of these migrants from Southeast Asia. The increase in the number of new-residents has led to the extension of many research topics in different research fields in the past, such as the adaptation of new second-generation children, transnational marriage life and family structure. This research focuses on factors such as the original family, school, and external events. During the process of political socialization, how do those factors influence and shape the national identity of the new second generation Vietnamese in Taiwan.
This research adopts in-depth interviews with eleven second generation Vietnamese, and analyze how the factors of native family, school education and external events shape their national identity during in the process of political socialization. The results show that the primary identity of the second generation Vietnamese is deeply influenced by their mother and the birthplace as Taiwan. In addition, school factors and external factors such as social media and the Sunflower School Movement, plays an important role while the second generation Vietnamese seeks to establish their own national identity of Taiwan. The national identity of Vietnam is only built in the relative of race, blood and ethnic culture.
The research results also found that the usage and fluency of the first language in the family will affect the second generation Vietnamese’s sense of identity. For the second generation Vietnamese, they believe that national identity should be an answer that always be changed during the way they grow up. The participation of the new second generation over the policy formulation regarding mother-tongue education should be considered by the government in the future.
