In recent years, cities have increasingly hosted large-scale events to boost local economies and tourism, simultaneously addressing urban issues. The advent of Web 2.0 has revolutionized public engagement, with social media emerging as a pivotal platform for expressing personal views, gathering public feedback, and analyzing the public’s relationship with urban spaces. This wealth of user-generated content, including reviews, observations, images, and geospatial data, is invaluable for urban planning.
This study focuses on the 2022 Keelung City Expo, a government-led event that showcased the city's diversity and drew over a million visitors. By analyzing check-in posts on social media from January to December 2022, the research assesses the event's impact on spatial transformation and attraction attention in Keelung. It explores changes in the popularity of attractions and public preferences for specific landscape elements before, during, and after the event. The study also examines how temporary and permanent spatial modifications influence these factors.
Results highlight the positive effects of urban events on local tourism and city attraction popularity. Key landscape features influencing tourism include natural water bodies, ports, historic buildings, and art installations. The presence of temporary spaces during the event notably increased attention to permanent spaces. This study sheds light on public landscape preferences and attraction trends, offering valuable insights for future urban event planning to invigorate local tourism and enhance the vibrancy of urban life.
