Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that may change the nature of many industries. RFID refers to a branch of automatic identification technologies in which radio frequencies are used to capture and to transmit data. The automotive industry is one of the pioneer industries which already use RFID technology in a variety of applications. RFID technology can reduce cycle time, control assembly process more effectively, and improve the distribution and transportation management. Many auto parts manufacturers are also deploying RFID technology for tracking these products in the operation and logistics process, the supply chains in auto industry are therefore under paradigm shift in the next few years.
To measure the RFID-readiness in the automotive industry is the first step to integrate its information flow among the suppliers, the manufacturers and the retailers. This research formulates a framework, covering organization, environment, and technology, with two metrics for each facet. The proposed framework is justified by a case for illustration purpose of how to apply it in automotive manufacturers, and parts manufacturers. The RFID readiness is also tested on a dataset of 32 firms in the automotive industry. This research verified that the technology context, organization context, and environment context are associated with each other and value expected, managers’ commitment, and network infrastructure are the key factors influence the intent of adopting RFID in the industry.
In summary, a systematical method is proposed to evaluate RFID readiness, which is based on an integrative theoretical framework using TOE theory. New enhancements would be referred to further adoption of the methodology to the RFID area in supply chain operation and apply to other industries to make the metrics more reliable.
