傳統建築是一具有演化特質的文化概念，並建構在歷史文化與人們生活聚落範疇。公共藝術是現代城市生活空間中一個審美屬性的藝術資產，涵蓋「文化景觀」、「文化路徑」二種意涵，同時也形塑著一個城市建築空間的藝術象徵。
隨著都市更新計畫進行，城市景觀樣貌以在地文化顯現特色，並在空間上以建築作為傳達文化身份的工具。透過傳統建築累積的結構與長時間演化，可看見一個區域的文化層內容樣貌，它同時並存著文化價值保留與現代都市建築更新設計的兩項問題；這兩個問題也正微妙地在各個都市角落發酵與產生建築設計的決策討論。
保留建築歷史文化層內容設計樣貌，加入對當前城市設計再現，可作為展現現代建築可持續性文化價值的一種方式。本文將透過歷史建築案例探討與公共藝術景觀設置設計模式，提出了一個同時呈現歷史建築文化價值與公共藝術景觀之間權衡的設計模式；並將歷史建築樣式以公共藝術手法進行可持續模式案例設計規劃。
研究成果包括:1.可持續性設計可作為城市建築空間規劃模式。2.文化層的設計樣式可作為現代建築歷史街道景觀的永續發展設計模式。3.透過公共藝術設計特徵作為主要設計特徵指標，進行評估傳統建築設計樣式，歷史建築設計樣式、造型特色與文化意涵進行特徵評價，將可以作為未來城市公共空間計畫上，一項重要且可被應用的評估方式，以及建築工程可持續設計的藝術模式。

"Heritage building" is a cultural concept with evolutionary characteristics mainly constructed above the category of historic culture and people's living settlements. “Public art” is an artistic asset with aesthetic attributes in urban living spaces that contains two connotations: “cultural landscape” and “cultural route”, which formed artistic symbols of urban architectural space at the same time. As the progress of urban renewal plan, local culture characterized the urban landscape, making architecture a tool to convey cultural identity spatially. Through the accumulated structure and long-term changes of historic buildings, a region’s appearance, and the content of the traditional architectural styles raise the issues of "cultural value preservation" and "modern urban renewal" which generate decision-making discussion of design subtly in every corner of a city. This dissertation examines the extant literature and the design model of public art settings, to construct a design model that maintains balance between the cultural value of historic buildings and the landscape of public art has been proposed as a result.
