    A Study of Faustus's Mind

    Abstract

Faustus is often considered a person, who pursues the endless knowledge, defies the authority of the Almighty, and faces the conflict deep in his heart. However, these considerations center on Faustus's capacity to investigate the diversities of his mind. Faustus remains cognizant of the antagonism of the outside world. To survive well, he must remain aware of the alternatives: "to eat" or "to be eaten." Taking advantage of his blood as a way to render him superior to others is mandatory. Without such actions he is not able to realize his dreams to rein over all the provinces, come by knowledge, or conquer his courtesan, Helen. Without these steps, Faustus is degraded and impoverished by one fact, that is, he is nothing but an incompetent scholar. Despite his external power, he truly becomes a servile puppet to Lucifer. This thesis aims to explore Faustus' mind. Critics like Marilyn French and Flannigan-Saint-Aubin all illuminate the terms of Faustus's mental development. In addition, both Angels offer an avenue of insight into Faustus's change of mind and intention. Abundant episodes from the text are examined under these critical theories and used to explain Faustus's mental process.
