Research Background: Breastfeeding rate is declining after the first to 4th months. Scholars suggested breastfeeding support groups combine professional peer support, may enhance mother’s motives and prolong breastfeeding duration.
Research Purpose: Understand the effects of support group to breastfeeding self-efficacy and intended feeding duration.
Research Methodology: Mothers were diided into the experimental and control groups. Women participated in the breastfeeding support group were considered as the experimental group. A structured questionnaire research tool was used for data collection. Repeated measures and linear regression were adopted to analyze the data.
Research Results: The sample consists of 102 lying-in women. Women in experimental group reveal higher breastfeeding self-efficacy and higher breastfeeding willingness both in the second and third postpartum month. Women in the experimental group demonstrated higher self-confidence in breastfeeding techniques and interpersonal thoughts. In addition, women also extended their intended breastfeeding duration. Furthermore, times of attending breastfeeding support groups contributes to higher breastfeeding self-efficacy.
Conclusion: The above results indicate that attending breastfeeding support groups improves mothers’ breastfeeding self-efficacy and breastfeeding duration. As a result, this study indicated that attending breastfeeding support groups has a positive impact on breastfeeding.
