Purpose:To investigate the relationships in internal load and external load (training distance) indicators of adolescent middle-distance runners. The study utilized a Google Form-based training diary to record the variations in these indicators. The objectives were to examine the relationships among (1) training volume or training distance, (2) the fluctuations in physical and mental stress, and (3) the rating of perceived exertion indices.
Method: (1) Participants: A total of 8 middle-distance runners were included in the study.
(2) Training Diary: Participants completed an online training diary using a Google Form. The diary included information such as training time, sRPE, total training distance, training mood, and performance in competitions and tests.
(3) Statistical Analysis: Pearson's correlation analysis was used to examine the correlations among various quantifiable indicators. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to assess the associations between different training diary indicators and training load indicators.
Result: Pearson's correlation analysis revealed significant positive correlations between sRPE and exercise duration (r = .098, p = .012), sRPE and estimated training load (TL) (r = .781, p < .001), and sRPE and training distance (r = .402, p < .001). These results indicate a significant positive correlation between sRPE and each of the aforementioned variables. Further linear multi-regression analyses revealed that sREP and exercise duration are significantly correlated with TL.
Conclusion: The study demonstrates that utilizing training diaries recorded with sRPE can effectively capture both internal and external loads. These diaries can be utilized to compare indicators, monitor athletes' training load in accordance with training cycles, and improve overall sports performance. By incorporating personalized training diaries into the monitoring process, coaches and trainers can optimize athletes' training load, leading to enhanced athletic performance.
