Design education in Taiwan emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, advocating for the enhancement of students’ design capabilities and employment competitiveness through industry internships and industry-academia collaborations. However, under the trends of industry practice orientation and international perspectives, the younger generation, influenced by global trends, has brought significant impacts to Taiwan’s design field. At the same time, Taiwan’s industrial design education faces challenges such as insufficient resources and intense market competition, necessitating improvements and innovations. Thus, design education must focus more on the needs of the industry and society for design talent, aligning educational programs with industry demands. This alignment aims to enhance the quality of design talent and their competitiveness in the market, ultimately driving the development of Taiwan's industrial design industry.
The apprenticeship system, as a time-honored, traditional, and effective method of education and learning, has been widely applied since ancient times in various fields, including knowledge acquisition and craftsmanship training. It is regarded as an effective means of educational inheritance. Therefore, integrating the apprenticeship system with modern educational models to achieve a fusion of theory and practice, meeting industry demands, will be a crucial topic for future research in design education.
Therefore, this study constructs a mentorship inheritance education model suitable for design education, based on the traditional apprenticeship system, and explores its application in the field of design education. By reviewing the historical development of the apprenticeship system, the current situation of mentorship inheritance education, and the relevant developments in Taiwan’s industrial design education, a theoretical framework “Design Education Mentorship Inheritance Model” is constructed. This framework was validated through seven years of practical teaching applications. The study employed case observations, interviews, and scale assessments to explore the practical application outcome and effects of the model.
The research results indicate that the design education mentorship inheritance model shapes three key inheritance modes: ‘top-down education and supervision,’ ‘top-down guidance and discussions,’ and ‘mutual assistance and learning between levels.’ The study found that these inheritance modes significantly enhance students' comprehensive design abilities in innovative thinking, aesthetic capability, computer-aided design, prototyping, and communication. Moreover, these inheritance modes not only transmit design expertise and skills but also enable students to uncover their personal strengths and develop into designers with distinct orientations: "Technically-Oriented," “Marketing Communication-Oriented," “Collaborative Management-Oriented," or “Craftsmanship-Oriented." Additionally, the implementation of this model also effectively fosters team spirit and leadership skills among students, laying a solid foundation for their future career development.
In summary, the mentorship model in design education is a dynamic system that integrates academic theory with practical experience. As the design process evolves, it generates multi-layered mentor-mentee (senior-junior) interactions, fostering team development and knowledge transfer.
