This study seeks to understand whether there are cultural influences in partner selection of strategic alliances and what can be learned from this differences, as previous studies cited cultural differences as an important factor in partner selection criteria. For this reason, we have decided to investigate focal firms from two regions entering strategic alliance with Chinese companies in China. Firstly, the DACH region (including Austria, Switzerland and Germany) and secondly the CSD (including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore). We target these areas to learn more about the impact of cultural differences (culturally remote versus culturally proximate) on selecting partners. We used survey to gather data, and altogether we obtained a sample of 182 cases, of which 93 were companies from the DACH region and 89 were companies from the CSD.

Our results show that there are differences in the selection of the different criteria for task-related criteria and partner-related criteria of cultural remote and cultural proximate countries. This study can sensitize managers to cultural differences that occur in forming strategic alliances between neighboring and remote cultural areas. In addition, it can help managers to find out what criteria the DACH region or the CSD region prefers when choosing partners. Furthermore, this might help further identify, understand and adapt better practices and enhance the performance of strategic alliances.
