Smart phones have become today’s mainstream usage of mobile phone, text messages (SMS) using circulation has substantially grown in recent years. And now the mobile phone typing still has some inconvenience, long-term using may even lead to cumulative damage. In order to improve the existing shortcomings and achieve the purpose of enhancing the input performance, this research develops two new input methods through the side physical buttons with the touch screen according to QWERTY keyboard layout.
This study can be divided into usability observation and measurement, pre-test experiments, new text entry method design, and performance test of new text entry methods. Researchers design new type of text entry method through observation, measurement and the results of the pre-test experiments. At last, they do performance tests and subjective assessments of new text entry methods. The experimental results show the two new input methods have a good learning performance, space corresponding type method has a lower error rate, action corresponding type method is even faster than current input method in short period. Expecting that the research could be the forward-looking considerations of new style mobile phone input method.
