In recent years, both internationally and domestically, the maintenance and innovation of tangible craft clusters and intangible traditional craftsmanship skills and talents are imperative goals of the government’s dedication to development. The term "craftsman" is often widely used as a selling point. In the past, the craft industry used to be the main source of Taiwan’s economy. Nevertheless, under the changing lifestyle, many craft clusters are gradually fading away, many craftsmen are faced with the problem of no successor and loss of craftsmanship skills. Therefore, re-examining the needs of tourists, how to reinvent local value through transformation has become an urgent issue in local development.
As millennials who pay attention to spiritual life become the main consumers of society, the experience economy has also flourished. Under the impact of the pandemic and the reaction of the technological generation, in-depth domestic tourism has become a new trend in the tourism industry. On the other hand, sensory experience has become a new entry point in experience design in recent years, which also brings inspirational influence to this research. This research summarized the definition of a craftsman in terms of spiritual connotations and cultural continuity. We synthesized the experience of interviews with the craftsman and found the sensory elements mentioned by the craftsmen represent the identification and practice of industry knowledge, personal preferences and the transmission of a sense of healing, which is a good medium to understand more deeply the knowledge and technology of an industry and the spirit of the craftsmen.
In view of the preservation of the rich and diverse craftsmen's culture in Sanxia, this research takes stock of the industrial clusters centered on Sanxia Old Street and discovers the diversity of crafts that are interwoven by the tea-making, indigo dyeing, ceramics, traditional cakes making, blacksmith, woodcarving, and Buddhist ceramics industries. Therefore, this research will take the craftsmen engaged in these three industries in Sanxia as a case study, and conduct the research through cultural probe method and in-depth interviews, which are common in experiential design research methods, focusing on sensory experience design as a narrative method to explore how to transmit the value of the craftsmen's culture to the tourists and promote their value recognition of the craft culture. This research will serve as a guideline for other local cultural or craft promoters who want to through experience to promote local humanistic culture.
