Students are in a unique situation whereby their financial resources are limited until after graduation, when they are expected to earn an above average salary. With the financial constraint disappearing after graduation, the barrier of entry to car ownership sinks. In addition, student life is temporary (typically in the range 6 months to 6 years), so they are in this situation for a comparatively short time. It presents an opportunity to analyse their commuting habits in this short time period. As the car isn’t compatible with a sustainable future, it is important to research the reasons students chose a particular mode of transport, as well as the preferred transportation method if money was no object. Students are a great subject for understanding sustainable commuting choices for two primary reasons: Students generally are not fully financially independent, which means that the car as a commuting method generally isn’t chosen. A student typically moves to take up place at a university. Their choice of new home will be influenced by the availability, pricing, quality of public transport, and distance to the campus. This study aims to understand the factors which influence the commuting choices students make in cities in Switzerland and Taiwan. A web survey asked the students about their chosen commuting method and about their preferred method, including their attitudes to various other means of transport, with the goal of determining whether there is a significant difference in commuting methods due to weather, infrastructure and or culture between students in Switzerland and Taiwan. The survey included social norms, socio-demographic information, and, of course, mobility patterns. In this way, the survey results were used to determine how significant some of the following are in choosing a means of transport: quality of public infrastructure, personal financial resources, climate, sustainability of the mode of transport. The study found that the scooter or motorcycle in Taiwan replaces trips made by public transport in Switzerland. The most common reason for this was a lack of adequate public transportation options, namely, low frequency, low reliability and low coverage. This insight would indicate that there is a real opportunity for universities to collaborate with transport operators as well as with local governments to enable more frequent and more reliable public transport services to and from university campuses.
