The comparative leaf anatomy of the subfamily Bambusoideae cultivated in Taiwan was studied for systematics and identification purpose.
The leaf sections and epidermal tissues were prepared by both paraffin section and clearing methods for light microscopy. The results show some unique characters such as the presence of fusoid cells, the arm shape mesophylls and a C3 grass without Kranz anatomy in this subfamily. The chlorophyll in the bundle sheath us smaller than the one in mesophyll. In the exception of the genera Bambusa and Arundinaria, there are no conspicuous unique characters in each genus. We find that the bulliform cells 、pricle hairs and micro hairs are more useful as the diagnostic characters for identification in this study. The thickness of mesophyll and the length/width ratio of long cell are more or less useful characters for identification.
