Clinical nursing work requiring rotating night shifts is a common phenomenon. Numerous studies indicate that prolonged rotation of night shifts can lead to a decrease in sleep quality and dysfunction in emotional intelligence (EI). However, both daytime and nighttime exercise are helpful in improving sleep quality and EI. Clinical nursing staff need to have a healthy physical and mental state themselves to provide excellent quality care. Therefore, having a regular exercise routine during rotating night shifts can help prevent work fatigue and reduce nursing staff turnover rates. Propose: To explore the relationship between nighttime exercise and the sleep quality and emotional intelligence of night-shift nursing staff. Methods: Eight night-shift nursing staff aged 23 to 46 years were recruited. They had no chronic diseases, no regular exercise habits, and had sleep disorders (with a PSQI score of 5 or higher). They engaged in 30 minutes of jogging after their evening shift (1:00 to 2:30 a.m.). The PSQI and WLEIS scales were used for evaluation, and a commercially available smart wristband (Xiaomi 7) was used to monitor heart rate. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS19 for descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: This study found significant improvements in overall sleep quality and emotional intelligence after the intervention of nighttime exercise. Emotional regulation, a component of emotional intelligence, showed a significant improvement. Additionally, higher resting heart rates after jogging were associated with higher PSQI scores. Conclusion: (1) Nighttime jogging significantly improves overall sleep quality. (2) Nighttime jogging significantly enhances overall emotional intelligence. Night-shift nursing staff should be encouraged to establish exercise habits to promote a healthy lifestyle.
