Firms have recognized that they need to cooperate with others to share risks and engage in innovation. Firms have been aggressively building business networks since 1980. Inter-firm collaboration has increased rapidly and shaped a tide of collective competition. Although the increasing importance of the business network, little has been done in the literature in examining the relationships among the internal and external determinants, the embeddedness of the business network, and the innovative performance of the firms. Therefore, this study attempts to fill the gap in the literature by providing an integrative research framework through extensive literature review to identify the key determinants and to examine the relationships among these determinants, the embeddedness of the business network, and the innovation performance of the firms. Based on transaction cost theory, resource-based view, and organization learning theory, hypotheses were proposed and then examined through an empirical study.
The population in this study is the top 5000 firms of Taiwan listed in the China Credit Incorporation. A random stratified sampling method was used to select 500 firms. Of the 500 questionnaires mailed, 130 responses were received and valid. It represents a useable response rate of 26%.The major findings of this study include: First, the results of the regression analyses show support for the positive effects of environmental uncertainty on repeated ties, environmental systematization on repeated ties, the strength of ties and structural embeddedness, and co-specialization on repeated ties, the strength of ties and structural embeddedness, and relational capital on repeated ties; and for the negative effect of relational capital on the strength of ties. Secondly, the results of the regression analyses suggest that repeated ties, the strength of ties and structural embeddedness have positive impacts on the innovative performance. Thirdly, the results of the regression analyses suggest that organization culture attributes and external vertical knowledge sources have positive impacts on the innovative performance. Finally, the results of regression analyses indicate that organizational culture attributes have strong interaction effects with the strength of ties and structural embeddedness on the innovative performance.
