Background
Schizophrenia is a devastating disease. Current therapeutic concept not only emphasize on the recovery of symptoms, but also the preservation of social function and quality of life. In addition, quality of life is an important index of health measurement which currently attracts more attention in the application of outcome research.
Research Aim
The purpose of this study is to estimate the quality of life and related determinants after illness onset of schizophrenic patients.
Method
Subjects receiving face-to-face interview includes 24-hour hospitalized patients and community patients. The scores of WHO Quality of Life-BREF (TW) and EQ-5D are obtained to determine the quality of life of schizophrenic patients. This study also estimate mood condition (Brief Symptom Rating Scale), social performance (Personal and Social Performance Scale), level of occupational activity and their relation to quality of life. Analysis with multiple linear regressions was conducted to study determinants of QOL domains and items.
Result
The WHOQOL-BREF (TW) is reliable and valid when applied to schizophrenic patients. Patients with high score in BSRS-5 got lower score in physical, psychological, social domains in WHOQOL-BREF (TW) and pain / discomfort, anxiety / depression and utility in EQ-5D. PSP are relevant to WHOQOL-BREF (TW) in psychological domain. The related determinants of Quality of life of schizophrenic patients are mood, social function (marriage status, education level and occupationally rehabilitation) and age.
Conclusion
Quality of life of schizophrenic patients assessing by WHOQOL-BREF (TW) has correlation with mood. EQ-5D is related to the psychosocial performance measured by PSP and are less affected by emotional state.
