This thesis focuses on the spatial transformation of two main cities, Tainan and Taipei, in colonial Taiwan. Some scholars of architecture and urban planning have used an extremely simplified perspective to examine and conclude upon the spatial modernization under colonial rule – a palimpsest process without subjectivity. Challenging this viewpoint, this thesis seeks to explore new possibilities of discussing space and place whenever topics related to colonialism and modernization are encountered. It aims to answer the following questions: What did the urban images really demonstrate under the interaction of coloniality and modernity in Taiwan? What are the exact meanings of the transformation of the urban context under colonial rules? Were architecture and urbanism under Japanese rule only a project of building colonial modernity without subjectivity?

To respond to the aforementioned questions, this thesis draws attention to the relationships of the following terms: space and place, body and space, text and space. It is structured in three main parts: the first part, the introduction, summarizes the aims and framework of the study. The second part contains the spatial theories and literature review of this research topic. It mainly takes the spatial ideas of Henri Lefebvre and Edward Soja, then deals with the topics of modernity and colonialism. This part is designed to emphasize these two effects of urban space and then focuses on envisioning modernity and colonialism in Japan and Taiwan. This is followed by a discussion of the concepts of body in architectural and urban space; in addition, it examines the subject in the context of the issues of memory, identity and belonging. The third part discusses the specific cities, Tainan and Taipei, as a case study. First, it focuses mainly on the transformation of urban contexts through different periods: (1) the “space-perceived” period: the spatial practice of Tainan and Taipei; and (2) the “space-conceived” period: representations of Tainan and Taipei. The discussion then turns to “real–and-imagined” space, dealing with the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized from the perspectives of walking and viewing.

This thesis concludes not with a clear-cut answer but a dynamic frame that can be used to explore new meanings of spatial transformation in colonial Taiwan and could become a catalyst to encourage other discussions in the future. More importantly, the discussion of spatial transformation related to coloniality and modernity is an ongoing spatial writing for those people in once-colonized countries.
