本論文旨在探討荷蘭著名軍事工程師西蒙．斯蒂文《論城市與堡壘圍攻術》之理論與實踐間的關聯性。斯蒂文撰寫此書的原稿時，正逢荷蘭海外擴張時期以及八十年戰爭中間階段。期間，斯蒂文曾擔任奧蘭治親王莫里斯的首席軍事顧問，協助設計堡壘建築與攻城工事，並設立萊頓大學工程學院以教授防禦工事相關基礎課程。基於此，斯蒂文的理論著作實質反應了荷蘭在戰爭前期累積的經驗，對後世攻城學產生了深遠影響。

本研究將以《論城市與堡壘圍攻術》之理論作為研究主體，該書涵蓋了「偵察」、「包圍」與「進逼」三大部分。其中包圍工事包含軍營、堡壘、帽堡與包圍線；進逼工事則包含戰壕、碉堡、砲臺與跨越護城壕的設施，詳細闡述攻城的步驟與原則，其核心理念可能源自古羅馬時期的圍城戰術。比較案例分為三大類型，首先為八十年戰爭期間荷蘭共和國於荷蘭本土的攻城戰役；其次為17世紀荷蘭東印度公司於亞洲的攻戰役；最後為鄭成功於福爾摩沙熱蘭遮的攻城戰役。上述案例的空間層級從荷蘭延伸至亞洲，旨在檢視當時的軍事觀念是否透過海洋的傳播而相互影響。

為建立理論與實踐間的比較基礎，本研究將以圖像分析作為主要的研究方法，方得構建空間元素成為理論與實踐間的共同語彙。具體而言，本研究將聚焦攻城戰略與工事設計在城市空間上的佈局意涵。其中，自然環境與堡壘形式皆為影響攻城工事的外在因素。因此，在分析各案例前，將先探討被圍城市周圍的基本空間資訊。爾後，通過《論城市與堡壘圍攻術》中的攻城設置原則，對各案例進行比對與考查，從而在某種程度上重新理解與詮釋理論與實踐間的關聯性，最終得出結論如下。

首先，在荷蘭本土的戰役中，書中觀念幾乎得到完全實踐，尤以在八十年戰爭後期戰役為甚，反應出低地國的環境特徵。其次，在亞洲地區的戰役中，兩者之間的關係並非單純相同或相異，而是呈現了因地制宜的應用模式。這些應用並非僅套用單一準則，而是根據自然環境、堡壘形式、駐軍數量與成本考量等諸多因素所致。儘管如此，仍可見許多與書中相似之觀念。最後，在鄭成功於熱蘭遮戰役中，展現出諸多常見於歐洲攻城戰的工事設計，如軍營、壕溝、堡籃與地雷等的設置觀念。

由此可見，在相同的時代背景下，無論戰場是在荷蘭本土還是延伸至亞洲及臺灣，無論攻城者是荷蘭人還是鄭成功，均採取了相似的攻城工事與戰略。這反映出攻城工事的設計觀念在不同地域間的延續性與適應性。

This thesis focuses on the relationship between the theories and practices of Dutch military engineer Simon Stevin in his work Vant Belegheren der Steden en Sterctenbouwing. Stevin composed this manuscript during the mid-period of Dutch overseas expansion and the Eighty Years' War. During this time, he served as a military advisor to Prince Maurice of Orange. He also established the engineering school of Leiden University, contributing to the design of fortress architecture and siege works. Consequently, Stevin's theoretical work reflects the practical experiences accumulated by the Dutch during the early stages of the war, which profoundly impacted the development of siege warfare in subsequent periods.
Vant Belegheren der Steden en Sterctenbouwing provides details of siege tactics and principles, divided into three main sections: "Reconnoitering," "Investment," and "Approach." Investment works include military camps, fortresses, bonnets, and circumvallation lines. Approach works include trenches, redoubts, batteries, and constructions to cross moats. The practical case studies are categorized into three main types:
1. The Sieges Conducted by the Dutch Republic in the Netherlands during the Eighty Years' War.
2. The Sieges Conducted by the VOC in Asia during the 17th century.
3. The Siege Conducted by Koxinga at Fort Zeelandia in Formosa.
These cases span a geographical scope from the Netherlands to Asia and Taiwan, with the attacker's role shifting from the Dutch to Koxinga. The aim is to analyze whether commonalities in siege design exist under similar historical contexts.
