Vocabulary learning is one of the major impact factors in English learning. One way to approach this learning task is to undertake extensive reading of English articles. For promoting vocabulary learning in an extensive reading environment, providing multiple-choice glosses while reading is a widely studied technique. The reason is that multiple-choice glosses can connect both advantages of vocabulary glosses and meaning inferring. Besides, many scholars investigate using the feedback of the vocabulary test to update the memory cycle of the vocabulary on improving vocabulary learning.
This thesis proposed an English vocabulary learning system with an extensive reading environment. The system can update memory cycles of vocabularies of a learner through the feedback of multiple-choice glosses successfully and promote the learner’s vocabulary abilities in a limited period. Furthermore, an indirect memory cycle update method is also presented in the thesis to adjust memory cycles according to contextual information, and the indirect memory cycle update method can decrease number of test times and allow the vocabularies that need to be reviewed appearing more precisely.
