  • Expatriates are typically people who are residing in a place other than their country of origin. Since China has experienced rapid economic growth it has had a higher influx of foreign expatriates than it has in previous years. The United States and China make up the number one and two economies of the world, however the existing trade deficits between the two are exorbitant. Given the different cultural restraints, it was sought to seek the degree of willingness that Americans are to accept an international assignment in Mainland China. The experiment targeted an American audience, which was initiated with a real expatriate job offer. Fredrick Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of Motivation gauged the potential expatriates’ perceived job satisfaction and perceived job performance that they formed based on hygiene and internal motivation factors. Grasping an understanding of how the audience felt about the job offer’s description and working conditions itself, and this was a precursor for them to accept an international offer, along with the two moderating factors given the audience’s country of origin and the assignment’s country of destination. The final results show that American’s are neither in favor nor against working in China. Although, the moderating effects showed no significance, there is a chance for future researchers to study more in depth and applying other countries into the model.
