The purpose of this study is to decipher how heritage interpretations work and effect tourist experiences of independent tourists at heritage sites. This research takes Chihkan Tower and the Former British Consulate at Takao as cases for investigation. These two popular sites are inscribed as First-grade heritage and Second-grade heritage respectively for its historical significance. Because the two sites as heritage have their own complexity whereas it has retained diverse characteristics from different colonial periods. Therefore, it is essential to know what role does interpretation play and how does it work at the heritage sites with multifaceted historical contexts.
Because interpretations can mediate between tourists‟ perceptions and the relics, historical background and even the tourist experiences. This study endeavours to analyse how the interpretations on site facilitate visitors‟ experiences during the process of visitation. This research focuses particularly on independent tourists because they tend to experience and learn more during their tours. Also, they are inclined to receive interpretation service to understand the culture and history of heritage. Hence, through the comparison on the two selected sites, it is helpful to understand the status quo of heritage interpretation on site. Furthermore, it is expected to assist the managers of heritage sites to think about how to design the interpretation service well to maximise independent tourists‟ satisfaction. The guidelines are anticipated to be suitable for all heritage sites.
