John Updike utilizes Harry, a white Middle American man, as the main character in Rabbit Redux to react to unavoidable issues of the 1960s such as Vietnam War, racial conflicts and women’s liberation. The narrative attempts to relieve Harry's multiple anxieties and achieve racial reconciliation by arguing with others and several enforced educational practices. The first chapter of this thesis concentrates on Harry’s enthusiastic defense of America and himself during the Vietnam War. The second chapter discusses white people's racial anxieties about rising black assertiveness. Updike introduces a black radical and his enforced educational practices as the means to challenge Harry's racism. The third chapter looks into Harry’s anxiety about not being able to fully dominate the women in his family. Updike presents women’s activity by portraying Janice and Jill as the representatives to contrast with threatened masculine passivity.
