「城市島嶼」為本論文的研究主軸，並包含城市研究與建築設計兩個面向。透過研究與創作的反覆過程，推演Oswald Mathias Ungers建築師在1978年提出的城市島嶼論，並建立一套城市研究到建築設計的操作流程，以台南作為操作基地，加入當代城市必須面對的第三次工業革命議題，進行城市與建築、當代與歷史的對話。

本論文分為五個部分：

2. 城市中的城市：城市島嶼論
3. 城市島嶼計畫：操作方法的建構
4. 提案與創作：台南未來城市宣言
5. 檢驗與討論

第一章緒論描述本論文的研究動機、目的及流程，期望藉由研究與操作來建立城市與建築的關係。第二章透過理論及文獻的蒐集及整理，尋找一條從1960年代到當代的城市建築脈絡，提出城市島嶼適合作為當代城市策略的假說。第三章及第四章建構城市島嶼的操作方法並以台南為對象實驗，重新定義當代的城市島嶼論，從台南城市紋理的觀察選取八座島嶼作為八種生活面向，並提出三個建築設計提案：個人工場、共創工場與自造平台，創作台南成為第三次工業革命城市的烏托邦樣貌。第五章則以操作的過程與結果來進行假說的辯證，並透過原始及再定義的城市島嶼論，做主題性的討論。

“The Archipelago Project” is a thesis project concerns about “city research” and “architecture design”. Through the practice between research and design, turn the “City within the city: the Green Archipelago”, which proposed by Oswald Mathias Ungers in 1978, into an operative design process. Then apply this process to Tainan city due to the emerging issue, the third industrial revolution, in contemporary city. This thesis project provides a discussion between city and architecture in the history and contemporary situation.

There are five phases in this thesis:
