在TV-on-Mobile (TVOM) 服務平台,使用者可以使用手上的手持裝置,例如智慧型手機(SmartPhone),個人數位助理(PDA)或是個人媒體播放器(Personal Media Player, PMP)來收看電視,有如使用傳統的UHF/VHF行動電是一樣。傳統電視的優點是可以使用許多現有的傳輸實體網路,例如纜線(Cable),微波(microwave),或是VHF/UHF RF電波傳送節目,使用者只能單向的接收節目而無法互動。取而代之的,在TVOM服務中,只要能提供足夠的頻寬,任何電信系統中無線或是有線型式的IP網路都可以傳送電視節目給使用者作雙向互動式的觀賞。另一個優點是節目內容來源的多樣性(Diversity),在TVOM中,不再只有節目供應商(Content Provider)能夠供應節目給使用者選擇收視,任何單位甚至是使用者本人都可以成為節目供應者。可以這樣子想像,拍賣網站只提供簡單易用且低付費的平台給使用者,無限的拍賣內容由無限的使用者來提供;在本TVOM中,本系統有如是一個仲介及傳輸平台,簡單易用的ESS(Embedded Stream Server)可以讓無限的使用者提供無線的節目內容。因為後者的需求,我們以須設計出一個容易安裝使用、低成本且能符合多數使用者網路環境的ESS。而針對這個ESS的特性,也必須設計一個合適的TVOM架構以及輔助設備。另外,使用者手持的行動設備(Mobile Equipment)的多樣化也是必須考慮的,上面裝載的收視軟體(Stream Player),也必須做出適當的設計以提供更大的彈性。
“TV-on-Mobile” is believed that it will definitely be one of the “killer applications” on a cellular phone in the future.。In current telecom system, voice transmission service is still the major part of the services, in both of wired or wireless telecom networks. But in wired telecom, data service provides more and more benefit to the telecom company. More and more telecom companies use more packet switch systems for more data service in current wire telecom network. In wireless telecom network, 3G and 4G systems are designed to provide a fast and stability data transmission service. All of telecom companies believe that 3G or even 4G will happen, but in fact, 3G is still not popular yet in world wide because of stern realities. In the paper, we try to make the TVOM system works on the most popular wireless telecom system – GPRS. On a TV-on-Mobile (TVOM) system, a user can use his own handheld devices, such as smart-phone, PDA, and PMP (personal Media Player) to watch the TV program as they do on a traditional UHF/VFH mobile TV. One advantage is that the transmission media is not limited to any proprietary transmission media such as cable, microwave, or VHF/UHF radio. Instead, on the TVOM, a user can watch TV through any IP network of wireless telecommunication system or wireless network that provides enough bandwidth. The other advantage is the diversity of content sources. Not only content provider but also the user himself can provide the content for the system. In this study, we implement an embedded system for a low cost streaming server (SS) and a streaming player (SP) to make the application more feasible.
