Head up display (HUD) is an increasingly popular and ideal information instrument of a car, which makes it faster for the driver to capture information than a traditional instrument while paying attention to the road condition ahead. However, function weakening and related cognitive problems might cause some trouble to the use by elderly drivers. Therefore, the present research aims to study the impacts of information interfaces with different cognitive modes on the elderly drivers and explore which display mode of HUD is suitable for them. The experiment recruits elderly and younger subjects under two groups and requires them to independently operate tasks of two difficulty levels under the three kinds of cognitive modes, namely, visual, audio, and visual/audio. In the course, their work load and number of mistakes under each interface are collected and finally a brief interview is made. The results indicate that the two groups have no big difference in work load under the three interfaces, and the impact of visual interface is the most prominent and the impacts of the visual interface and visual/audio interface have no big difference. With regard to mistakes, the younger group has witnessed an identical result under three interfaces, while the elderly group has made significantly more mistakes under the audio interface than under the other two interfaces, but no difference between visual interface and visual/audio interface. According to the result of interview and survey, the three interfaces have brought a high impact to the subjects, especially the audio interface. Overall, the information system of HUD can be designed based on visual or visual/audio, but more importantly, it should pay attention to the behavioral pattern and limitation of the elderly.
