Unsignalized intersections, lacking traffic signal control, require vehicle drivers to adhere to road traffic safety regulations and coordinate with other vehicles and pedestrians. However, road users often misunderstand the right-of-way at these intersections, complicating pedestrian crossing behavior. Conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles frequently cause accidents, with inappropriate pedestrian crossing behavior at unsignalized intersections increasing the risk of accidents and injuries, thus affecting overall traffic efficiency and safety. Recent 3E (Engineering, Education, Enforcement) improvements at multiple intersections in Taiwan aim to shift from "Vehicle-Oriented Traffic Environment " to "Humanity-Oriented Traffic Environment," highlighting pedestrian safety as a key traffic safety issue. This study examines the characteristics and influencing factors of pedestrian crossing behavior at unsignalized intersections and the interaction between pedestrians and vehicles, focusing on vehicle yielding behavior.
The study uses field observations and video monitoring to analyze pedestrian crossing behavior and pedestrian-vehicle interactions at three-leg, four-leg, and multiple unsignalized intersections with crosswalks. Statistical analysis is performed on the collected data, examining pedestrian characteristics (gender, age), distraction behaviors (eating, chatting, using mobile phones), and unsafe crossing behaviors (using crosswalks, observing traffic). The study also analyzes pedestrian walking speeds by gender and demographic groups at different types of unsignalized intersections. Factors influencing pedestrian crossing behavior and their significance are identified. Field observations is used to analyze vehicle yielding behavior and pedestrian-vehicle interactions at unsignalized intersections.
Key findings include: (1) conversations and mobile phone use while crossing lead to pedestrians failing to observe traffic; (2) significant correlations exist between pedestrian characteristics, distraction behaviors, and unsafe crossing behaviors; (3) The proportion of vehicles not yielding is high, especially motorcycles, which are less likely to yield to pedestrians. The yielding rate is lowest for motorcycles turning right or going straight. These findings can guide government traffic agencies in designing targeted educational and promotional activities to achieve balanced coordination among pedestrians, vehicles, and road infrastructure. Enhancing law enforcement against non-yielding behaviors can improve pedestrian safety and reduce accidents at unsignalized intersections.
