在人際動詞(interpersonal verbs)當中有一類因果動詞具有內隱原因性(implicit causality)及內隱結果性(implicit consequentiality),能夠將事件原因及結果指涉至句子當中的主語或是賓語。本研究之目的為重新探討中文因果動詞之處理歷程支持焦點理論或是整合性理論,以及外語能力、心智理論能力和動詞處理三者之關聯。本研究分為三個實驗:實驗一中使用眼動儀透過視覺-情境典範(Visual world paradigm)來了解中文的因果動詞處理歷程,結果顯示動詞處理歷程與先前英文文獻不同,支持整合性理論,有可能因不同語言之特性所造成。為瞭解形成動詞處理個體差異的可能因素,實驗二先使用傾向性判定作業,調查具有高傾向性之中文因果動詞,之後加入英語能力作為獨變項,探討雙語者在此類動詞處理上之表現,另外,在刺激句中加入一中性片語,釐清動詞處理是否完全支持整合性理論。結果顯示加入中性片語後動詞處理支持焦點理論,但中文之處理速度依然較過往英文文獻慢,而雙語者可能因跨語言激發的干擾,無法直接瞭解其英語能力與動詞處理間的關聯。因此,實驗三以心智理論作業:Reading the Mind in the Eyes test revised (RMET)及YONI task,討論英語能力、心智理論與因果動詞處理此三者之關係。結果顯示動詞處理正確性與情感性心智理論能力有高度相關,但只有在非精通英語者身上才有此現象,精通英語者則是英語能力與情感性心智理論能力有高度相關。綜上所述,本研究主要有以下幾點結論:1.本研究使用與之前中文文獻不同的實驗方法,釐清中文因果動詞處理歷程支持焦點理論;2.對於非精通英語者而言,能夠以因果動詞理解來簡單推論受試者的情感性心智理論能力高低;3.精通英語可能會影響中文內隱原因∕結果性之判斷,不過,也因瞭解不同語言對於同一概念的內隱原因∕結果,而使得情感性心智理論能力伴隨英語能力提升。
Among the interpersonal verbs, there is a class of causal verbs with implicit causality and implicit consequentiality, which can refer to the cause and effect of an event on the subject (NP1) or the object (NP2) of a sentence. The purpose of this study is to re-examine the interplay among causal verb processing way (whether in focusing or integrating fashion), Bilingualism, and Theory of Mind (ToM) in processing the Chinese implicit causality verbs. This study is divided into three experiments: In Experiment 1, an eye tracker and the Visual world paradigm are adopted to understand the process of causal verb processing in Chinese. In Experiment 2 first identifies the Chinese causal verbs of high tendency with a bias decision task, then inquires about the effect of bilingualism by adding English proficiency as an independent variable. In addition, a neutral clause is added to the sentence to clarify whether the verb processing fully supports the integration theory. Experiment 3 uses the ToM paradigms: Reading the Mind in the Eyes test revised and YONI task, in exploring the relationship between English proficiency, Theory of Mind, and causal verb processing. The main conclusions drawn are as follows: 1. This study uses a different experimental method from the previous Chinese literature to clarify the processing of Chinese causal verbs to support the focusing theory; 2. For non-proficient English speakers, we can infer the subject's affective ability of ToM based on causal verb comprehension; 3. Proficiency in English may affect one’s interpretation of the Chinese implicit causality/consequentiality, while on the other hand, the affective ability of ToM is enhanced as the English proficiency increases due to the understanding of the implicit causes/effects of the same concept under the context of the different languages.
