The present study constructed a structure model of a causality relationship among parent-child attachment, autonomy orientation and contact with delinquent peers on the delinquency for junior high school students. The objective of this study was: 1) to clarify the relationship between high school students’ contact with delinquent peers and delinquency, 2) to examine the relationship among high school students’ parent-child attachment, contact with delinquent peers and delinquency, 3) to discuss the relationship among high school students’ autonomy orientation, contact with delinquent peers and delinquency, and 4) to analyze the impact of parent-child attachment, autonomy orientation and contact with delinquent peers on high school students’ delinquency. The participants were 1,124 seventh- to- ninth- grade students from junior high schools in southern Taiwan. The instruments employed in this study include: Parental Attachment Scale, General Causality Orientation Scale for Junior High School Students, Contact with Delinquent Peers Scale, Friendship Quality Scale and Delinquency Scale for Junior High School Students.
A number of important results were presented as follows. 1) High degree of fitness in the preliminary fit criteria, overall model fit and fit of internal structure. 2) Parent-child attachment had significant direct impacts on autonomy orientation, contact with delinquent peers, delinquency and could also indirectly affect the delinquency via contact with delinquent peers. 3) Autonomy orientation had significant direct impacts on contact with delinquent peers, delinquency and could also indirectly affect the delinquency via contact with delinquent peers. 4) Contact with delinquent peers was the most powerful predictor of junior high school students’ delinquency compared with parent-child attachment and autonomy orientation, while parent-child attachment and autonomy orientation were still needed to be considered for overall explanation of the delinquency. Based on these results, we also presented our suggestions on friend selection of junior high school students, the prevention of the delinquency as well as the future research.
