The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of acute exercise on visuospatial attention using the endogenous Posner paradigm by comparing behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) performance in undergraduate students with different levels of cardiorespiratory fitness. Thirty-eight undergraduate students aged 18-28 years were assessed by a VO2max test to identify their cardiorespiratory fitness and divided into high- (n=19) and low-cardiorespiratory (n=19) groups. All undergraduate students performed the endogenous Posner paradigm task with ERP recording before and after a 30-min acute bout of moderate intensity aerobic exercise. The behavioral and ERP performances in the pre-exercise session were taken as the baseline and compared with those in the post-exercise session in both groups. Results indicated that, high-cardiorespiratory group showed faster RTs and larger P3 amplitude as compared to low-cardiorespiratory group. After acute exercise, both groups showed faster RTs, shorter N2 latency, larger CNV area as compared to in the pre-exercise session. Interestingly, only the high-cardiorespiratory group exhibited the effect of acute exercise on the P3 amplitude. These results suggested that an acute bout of moderate aerobic exercise enhanced reaction time, response inhibition, and motor preparatory process for undergraduate students with low- and high-cardiorespiratory fitness, but only higher-cardiorespiratory group exhibited more efficient allocation of attentional resource after acute exercise.
