Taiwan is located at the boundary of the Eurasian plate and the Philippine Sea plate. The Philippine Sea plate subducts to east-north Taiwan. The Hualien area is located at the boundary of collision and subduction. Therefore, it has a high seismic activity and a complex tectonic system.
According to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) data, several catastrophic earthquakes occurred in the Hualien area. The Hualien area has recorded as many as 59,000 earthquake events from 2012 to 2019. According to previous studies, in addition to Milun fault that the first-level active fault and Lingding fault that the second-level active fault announced by the Central Geological Survey, some scholars also proposed the eastern part of the Central Mountain Range Faults and Daqingshui tear faults and other structures.
The GrowClust relocation method is used in this study to relocate earthquakes for detailed seismogenic structures. GrowClust uses relative phase arrivals for high accuracy relocation. The relocated earthquakes reveal major fault systems in the region and can be roughly divided into the following parts: The Milun fault, the Lingding fault, the west-dipping reverse fault on the east side of the Central Mountain Range, the reverse fault at estuary of Dazhuoshui river, and the main seismogenic structure of the 0206 Hualien earthquake.
