本論文主要是利用光聚合引致相分離方法製作可撓曲黑白膽固醇液晶顯示器。我們以垂直不摩擦的表面配向,搭配相分離產生的分散高分子枝條,成功地製成多重區域的膽固醇平面結構。且藉著高分子來穩定其結構,使具有雙穩態的特性,進而產生黑白顯示。同時利用相分離產生高分子間隔物,來提高其機械強度,而成為可曲撓式的顯示器材料,使其可隨意曲折成任何形狀,因此很適合作成為電子紙。
In this work, we developed a novel flexible black and white cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) display by using photoinitiated polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS). The process makes the device to contain polymer walls and dispersed polymer between glass (or plastic) substrates. The dispersed polymer provides the multi-domain CLC planar structure. Thus, the orientation of the helical axes of the multi-domain CLCs has a wide distribution, which results the reflection of white light under room light condition. The polymer walls give the mechanical strength that prevents the CLC domains from changing their structure in bending condition. When the mixture is in the focal conic texture, it has a black appearance because the incident light is scattered and absorbed by an absorption layer on the bottom plate. Both the planar and focal conic states are stable at zero field. Therefore, this display could be implemented for use as an electronic paper and other flexible display applications.
