The impact of social networks on the elderly's aging-in-place choices is an important consideration of neighbourhood social infrastructure and services. However, under the context of increasing digital communication on interaction habits today, whether the interaction preference of the elderly will still focus on physical face-to-face interaction or the elderly are more inclined to rely on digital interaction due to the degradation of physical functions? And what kind of interaction could effectively provide the elderly with plentiful social support so that they wouldn’t relocate in old age are all important issues in understanding the behavioural preferences of today's elderly as well. As a result, this article will measure the social network of the elderly with their interaction frequency, and analyze its influence on the decision of the elderly to conduct residential relocation in their later years.
About the methodology, this article arranged Panel Study of Family Dynamics(PSFD) as an empirical database. And establishing Logistic regression based on how the social network model would affect relocation choice. The degree of influence of each variable was analyzed by parameter analysis, odds ratio, and whether the coefficients were significantly different was compared by the z-test. In terms of the empirical result of the family networks, this study found that the frequent intergenerational face-to-face interaction and the social support maintained by long-distance digital communication will increase the possibility of the elderly's willingness to age in place. However, the impact of intergenerational face-to-face interaction on relocation probability is still greater than the impact of intergenerational telecommunications. Moreover, the elderly who lives alone will need more frequent meetings and communication to decrease the probability of relocation. Relevant social service agencies should also continue to pay attention to whether the interaction among the elderly living alone is sufficient to increase the probability of aging-in-place. In terms of local activity networks, this article found that compared with other local activity participation, participating in local religious activities will effectively reduce the probability of relocation. Revealing the networks that local religions are connected to is an important conduit for increasing place attachment.
