The number of Vietnamese and Chinese female spouses had increased rapidly recently in Taiwan. These immigrant female spouses usually had their first child in eighteen months after they had married. The short birthing space and the low contraceptive rate increased Vietnamese and Chinese female spouses’ pressure to adapt the new living environment. Therefore, provision of information of appropriate contraceptives might promote these immigrant spouses’ reproductive health. The purpose of the study was to explore the factors related to contraception in Vietnamese and Chinese female spouses in Taiwan. A cross-sectional correlation study design was used and the planned behavior theory was the conceptual framework to examine the research hypotheses. A convenient sample with a total of 170 women, eighty-five each in the Vietnamese group and the Chinese group, were recruited to this study. Findings of the study indicated that the majority of Vietnamese female spouses used condoms, but most of the Chinese female spouses utilized intrauterine devices to control birth. Perceived contraceptive control was the most important predictor to predict the contraceptive intention in Vietnamese female spouses. However, in Vietnamese female spouses, attitude toward contraception is the major predictor of their contraceptive intention. Contraceptive intention was the main predictor of contraceptive behavior in both Vietnamese and Chinese female spouses. In conclusion, results of this study would provide the fundamental information for developing trans-cultural family planning program for Vietnamese and Chinese female spouses.
