The genus Cuscuta belonging to the Convolvulaceae family comprises about 100–170 species spread around the world. Although several species have been studied for their phytochemical characterization and biological activities, there were still many species unexplored to date. The Cuscuta species were reported rich in flavonoids and glycosidic constituents, along with alkaloids, fatty acids, fixed oil, minerals, essential oil, and other phytomolecules. Flavonoids and other molecules of Cuscuta species exhibited various biological activities, for examples, anti-proliferative, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, and anxiolytic activities, while some other flavonoids were reported for their potential antiviral and anticancer activities especially in ovarian and breast tumor cells.
The present research reviewed all the available data for the twenty different Cuscuta species (C. approximata, C. arvensis, C. australis, C. attenuate, C. campestris, C. chilensis, C. chinensis, C. europaea, C. gronnovii, C. japonica, C. lehmanniana, C. lupuliformis, C. micratha, C. monogyna, C. odorata, C. pedicellata, C. pentagona, C. platyloba, C. racemosa, C. reflexa) mainly on the different types of phytochemical constituents and biological studies. This study was aimed to purify and identify the bioactive principles of C. campestris, and the purification was performed with the assistances of liquid-liquid extraction, column chromatography, and thin-layer chromatography. Totally thirty-one compounds were isolated from the extracts of C. campestris and their structures were identified through the comparison of their physical and spectroscopic data with those published in the literature. Among these, four lignans (+)-pinoresinol (8), piperitol (16), (+)-aptosimon (70), salicifoliol (202), two amides aurantiamide acetate (190) and aurantiamide (193), and one flavonoid kaempferol (9), had already been reported as the potential compounds with significant anti-inflammatory activity in the literature. These experimental results indicated that C. campestris and their constituents are promising candidates for anti-inflammatory drug development for further studies.
