The aim of this study was to examine the interactive effects between parental attitude toward Internet use and peer influences on Internet addiction among adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 2,253 students recruited by stratified and school-clustered sampling throughout Taiwan. The severity of adolescent Internet addiction was assessed by Chen Internet Addiction Scale—Revision. Parental attitude toward Internet use and peer influences were measured by the scales of perceived parental attitude toward Internet use, perceived peer attitude toward Internet use, perceived peer Internet use frequencies, and the frequencies of peer inviting for using Internet. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that the interactive effects between parental disapproval of Internet use and positive peer influences were significant. Positive peer influences moderated the effect of parental disapproval of Internet use on adolescent severity of Internet addiction. Further analyses indicated that among students with higher levels of positive peer influences, a higher level of parental disapproval of Internet use greatly predicted the severity of Internet addiction. In addition, parental disapproval of Internet use also moderated the effects of positive peer influences on adolescent severity of Internet addiction. Among students with higher levels of parental disapproval of Internet use, a higher level of positive peer influences greatly predicted the severity of Internet addiction.
