George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession, written in 1894, is a play about prostitution, which was one of the most worrying issues of the British society in the Victorian era. Shaw made use of the character of Mrs. Warren, a brother keeper, to draw the public’s attention to the fact that Victorian prostitution was mainly caused by the undervaluation and overworking of women. However, due to the sensitivity of the subject of prostitution, the play was censored and prohibited to be staged publicly in Britain until 1925.
Starting from a brief review to the anti-prostitution social movement, this thesis first gives an overview of the question of Victorian prostitution and theatrical works related to this subject. It then examines the development of theatre censorship, assessing its potential influence over theatrical productions, and even public attitudes towards the theatre and the issue of prostitution in the real world. Centering on Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession, this thesis aims to illustrate the changing attitudes of British public towards prostitution at the turn of the century as reflected in the major controversies over the issues in the Victorian society and in its treatment in fictional plays. Through analysis of techniques such as role portrayal, plot designing in Mrs. Warren’s Profession, as well as Shaw’s openly expressed views, this thesis attempts to investigate the innovation of Shaw’s work that differentiated itself from other works of the same subject, and to re-evaluate the suggestive significance of this difference in Victorian social and theatrical context.
