With the change of modern people's life style. National Human Activity Pattern Survey indicated that people spent up to 87% of time in their life staying in indoor. Considering that more and more studies have confirmed that indoor air quality was related to human health, indoor air quality has been gradually emphasized. Taiwan, located in a subtropical climate zone, with the weather of high humidity which would easily to be a hotbed of biological pollutants when the indoor environment was poorly ventilated.
Because of paper characteristics, air conditioning usage behavior, inadequate ventilation, bookshelf design and layout, library was more likely to become moldy and even resulted that the items were difficult to store and affected human health. So, the objective of this study was to investigate the mold situation of library and proposed improvement strategies for those serious cases.
In this study, 16 libraries in Taiwan, Tainan were carried out the current situation survey, results found that many books are contaminated by fungi in most of libraries. According to tha questionnaires, more than 40% occupant feel musty and had symptomatic reactions, and the results also found that the relationship between musty and symptoms was significant (P < 0.05) in statistical. Then, the mold germination risk was used to evaluate the mold level of libraries. Questionnaire and the mold germination risk model establish the necessity, methods, and objects of improvement strategies. Finally, the CFD was used to simulation the improvement strategies and SVE6 was used to evaluate the ventilation efficiency.
The simulation results showed that the amount of pollution in the seating area, work area and bookcase area has been reduced. Increased discharge of pollutants throughout the indoor space,In addition, the evaluated results of SVE6 (residual life time of air) found that decrease the pollutants discharge time which means the ventilation efficiency was be improved.
