Most existing studies on productivity, trade policy, and institutional change in Indonesia focused for the past political system under the New Order era. This study extends empirical study emphasizing the political economy since 2000. My study prioritizes the comprehension of historical context and circumstances within the framework of triangular relation among actors: state, market, and society. It deliberately pays attention with impressive nickel-based sector development. The data source for elucidating productivity, as Dependent variable, with Explanatory variables derived from trade policy and institutional factors, using firm-level data. This study posits that the connection between state and market is characterized by reciprocal symbiosis, however the relationship between state and society played differently. Secondly, our quantitative inquiries empirically assess interactions among productivity, trade-investment variables, and institutional change.
Empirical investigation can be summarized by several findings. Chapter 6 presents analysis that increased import percentage of nickel inputs positively influences productivity level (labor). Policy enhancements undertaken by the government boosted worker productivity and were supported by empirical data. Chapter 7 demonstrates empirical finding indicates that foreign direct investment (FDI) has a positive and substantial impact on labor productivity. Although this study cannot find statistical evidence for the total factor production. However, significance and enduring relevance of foreign investment extend beyond merely providing financing and facilitating technology and knowledge transfer; more crucially, the recipient nation gains from enhanced labor experience and innovative management systems for plants and firms.
Lastly, my study harnesses two game theory models to analyze narratives in Chapter 5. My paper advocates for the Indonesian government to transition from cooperative game to non-cooperative game. Cooperative game encompasses first narrative involving dispute over nickel reserve and state versus investor. While the second narrative depicts beneficiation result and European Union appeals to World Trade Organization. Former game would outcome a positive-sum for both actors – state and investor. The later game would result in a unfavorable outcome for Indonesian state.
