This research is designed to better understand how team member’s thinking style aggregate to team-level within a cross-functional team influences creative performance. Meanwhile, this study also aims to investigate the relationship between creative performance and goal achievement rates. Moreover, we examine the mediating role of creative performance and the moderating effect of domain relevant knowledge.
This research selects the industry which needs to achieve its organizational goals by making up cross-functional teams as survey samples, such as manufacturing, finance and other with higher level of knowledge-intensive and innovative industries. Two versions of questionnaires were used: one version for managers and another for members. We sent 560 questionnaires by mail and e-mail. Finally, a total of 110 valid questionnaires are returned and the response rate is 20%. After collecting multi-sources data from those companies, we conduct the hierarchical regression analysis to examine the research hypotheses.
Our findings can be summarized as following. First, there is the positive relationship between team-level thinking styles (legislative, and judicial) and creative performance. Second, creative performance is positively related with goal achievement rates. Third, creative performance fully mediate the effect of legislative thinking style and partially mediate the effect of judicial thinking style on goal achievement rates. Forth, domain relevant knowledge moderates the effect of thinking styles (legislative, and judicial) on creative performance.
This is the first research provided empirical evidences about cause-effect of thinking styles, creativity performance, and goal achievement rates. Besides, this study examines the creative performance mediating effect between thinking styles and goal achievement rates. Finally, it’s also the first empirical study to demonstrate the domain relevant knowledge has a moderating effect on creativity performance. As a whole, these findings can make contributtions to the academic research and practical implications.
