本研究聚焦17世紀荷蘭東印度公司在亞洲的殖民城市規劃，並選擇亞洲貿易網絡中的巴達維亞、安汶、熱蘭遮與普羅民遮為研究對象。荷蘭東印度公司在海外的城市規劃，很可能同時受到荷蘭本土理論、實踐傳統，以及海外各地的地理、軍事、政治、經濟等多重因素的共同影響。本研究試圖結合上述因素，盡可能全面地理解公司對海外亞洲殖民城市的空間規劃。
本研究首先結合低地國早期的城市規劃傳統和外來思潮，梳理了西蒙·斯蒂文 (Simon Stevin) 的荷蘭城市規劃理論與本土實踐在城市形態與內在意涵間的關聯性。接著，結合歷史圖像和文獻史料，重現公司在四座城市的擇址、輪廓、運河水道系統、街道網格模式與各類建築設施的空間規劃。荷蘭東印度公司以壟斷暴力的武力征服和製造階級不平等的治理政策為手段，來建立海外城市，從根本上，是為了實現公司在當地貿易中獲取暴利的核心目標。因此，本研究從一個以盈利為目的的商業集團視角，結合各地的地理環境、經濟基礎、軍事形勢、族群關係和公司採取的因應措施，重建公司在各地建立的靈活的商業模式，以此為基礎，來理解和分析這些荷蘭海外殖民城市規劃的空間內涵。並進一步比較這些海外殖民城市規劃與荷蘭城市規劃理論的異同。
基於上述分析和比較結果，本文最終得出結論：西蒙·斯蒂文的荷蘭城市規劃理論，反映出經濟理性的思考模式，藉由城市規劃來滿足貿易的空間需求、實現資源的最佳配置，為荷蘭海外殖民城市提供了系統的規劃原則。但是，該理論所提供的並非形態上的直接範本，在海外殖民城市的實際規劃中，沒有固定的形態標準。公司會因應不同區域據點的經營目標，基於當地的地理環境、軍事形勢和族群結構等因素，靈活地採取相應的商業模式，以此來規劃城市的擇址、輪廓、運河網絡和重要建築與設施的佈局關係。其中，城市擇址基於公司在當地的貿易發展戰略；有無城防系統和幾何形輪廓取決於公司與當地政權的關係；城市運河水路系統反映出當地的貿易運輸和族群隔離需求；各類建築與設施的佈局，則充分反映出各城市中公司與華人截然不同的商業合作關係。

This study focuses on colonial town planning carried out by the Dutch East India Company in Asia in the 17th century, taking four cities in the Asian trading network as examples. The overseas town planning carried out by this company was probably influenced by a combination of local Dutch theories and practical traditions, as well as geographical, military, political, and economic factors. This study is therefore aimed toward answering the following question: How can all of the related factors be combined in such a way as to lead to a comprehensive understanding the company's overseas town planning process?
The study begins by revealing the relevance of the form and meaning of Simon Stevin's theories of Dutch town planning. Then, town planning in four cities overseas is reconstructed based on historical images and documents. The company’s establishment of cities overseas through forceful conquest and governance policies was fundamentally carried out to achieve the company's core goal of profiteering in terms of trade. Thus, each of the proposed factors is analyzed from the perspective of a profit-oriented business group to understand the town planning scheme in the context of the company’s management mode in each city. Finally, a comparison is made between these schemes and Stevin's theories of Dutch town planning.
Based on the this analysis and comparison, it was concluded that Stevin's theories of Dutch town planning reflect an economically rational mode of thinking by providing a systematic planning principle for Dutch colonial cities overseas rather than a direct morphological model. The company takes into account the business objectives related to different regional locations, the local geography, the military situation, and the ethnic structure to build a different business model in each city. A flexible business model was then used in town planning in terms of location, city contours, canal networks, and the layout of important buildings and facilities, without a fixed standard.
