Emotions play a significant role in human life. Creativity is the ability to think about a task in a new or different way that promotes people to get a better life and can adapt to new changes in the current environment. Some studies suggested that people were more likely to be creative when in a state of positive emotion. However, fewer studies suggested that negative emotions could promote creativity. This study is aimed to explore the influence of personality traits and negative emotions on students' creativity. In the current research, 99 college students were recruited as research participants. Participants were asked to complete emotion and personality trait scales and a creativity test. Then, the participants were shown videos and recalled emotional events, after which they were asked to retake the tests. By analyzing the correlation between emotion, personality traits and creativity, evidence can help identify the critical factors of negative emotions on students' creativity. The results of this research indicate that college students’ creative performance in the negative emotional state is better than in the normal state. In particular, the fluency of their creativity is significantly improved, and the students are more open to experience and more likely to improve their creativity after their emotion are aroused. This research helps us clarify the relationship between emotion, creativity, and personality traits. Some educational implications and practical suggestions for future research and practices are offered.
