Equal access to public transportation is essential for achieving sustainability in the social context. Accessibility to public transportation significantly impacts women's ability to connect with various aspects of their social life, such as employment, education, healthcare facilities, etc. Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, boasts the most advanced public transport system in the country. One of the primary modes of public transportation in Jakarta is the KRL (Kereta Rel Listrik), a commuter line that extends its railway network throughout the Jakarta Metropolitan Area. Despite its efficiency, data shows that the KRL has a lower number of female passengers compared to male passengers. In this study, we investigate the experiences of female passengers using the KRL through the lens of social practice theory. This study adopted an investigative qualitative approach and conducted 16 semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Interview participants were divided into three categories: commuters, non-commuters, and ex-commuters, with the age range of 20 – 30 years old. The results show that they present different reasons for using the KRL, but they tend to have a dependency on using it due to its efficiency. However, they must face challenges such as overcrowding and jostling with other passengers, prompting them to develop strategies for personal safety and security. Furthermore, we revealed that female passengers have varied interpretations and experiences when riding the women’s carriage, which differs from the mixed carriage. People in the women’s carriage tend to be more aggressive, causing some female passengers to prefer the mixed carriage despite the reduced risk of sexual harassment in the women’s carriage. Through social practice theory, we understand that the physical infrastructure and facilities (material) interact with the passengers' perceptions and cultural norms (meaning) and their skills and knowledge (competence) to shape the overall experience of riding the KRL. Additionally, the women's carriage does not always guarantee a better experience compared to the mixed carriage.
