Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) can improve road safety and reduce driver workload, but their effectiveness also depends on driver acceptance. This study examined urban bus drivers in central Taiwan to assess their familiarity with and use of ADAS and identify factors influencing behavioral intention. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model, the model incorporated social influence, facilitating conditions, trust, and perceived risk and tested moderation by age, prior knowledge, and driving experience.
Of 381 questionnaires, 298 were valid. SPSS and AMOS were used for descriptive statistics, reliability and validity testing, the Kruskal–Wallis test, structural equation modeling, and PROCESS Model 1.
Perceived usefulness, facilitating conditions, and social influence positively influenced behavioral intention. Trust enhanced perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Perceived ease of use had no direct effect on behavioral intention but contributed indirectly through perceived usefulness, indicating that drivers valued safety benefits more than ease of use alone. Perceived risk had no direct effect, but its relationship with behavioral intention varied by age and driving experience. Age and driving tenure differed only in familiarity with selected ADAS functions; usage frequency showed no differences.
Bus operators should strengthen operating guidelines, training, equipment maintenance, and fault reporting. Authorities may use public transportation evaluations, operating subsidies, vehicle inspections and audits, and benchmarking to strengthen training and equipment management and enhance ADAS acceptance and safety benefits.
