    Abstract
Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray has been criticized as being utterly inconsistent with his major theoretical work, Intentions, and other publications on Aestheticism, mainly for the moral lesson the novel teaches at the end. However, given Wilde's life-long devotion to the principle of Beauty, his consistency in defending his aesthetic philosophy in his writings and his attitude towards life, I believe that there must be a continuation or parallel of ideas also in the novel. In this study I intend to prove that the novel still shows many crucial themes taken up by Wilde in Intentions, such as the role of the artist and critic as well as the characteristics of Art and criticism. Therefore, I will analyze the signature traits of “art for art’s sake” with its major proponents—Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Edgar Alan Poe, James Abott Mcneill Whistler and Algernon Charles Swinburne—so as to understand the foundation of Intentions, Wilde’s heritage and the close association of ideas. Then, I will interpret The Picture of Dorian Gray within the framework of Wilde’s Intention by taking Basil as the creative artist of Dorian the Portrait, and Henry as the critic who produces his piece of criticism which I name Dorian the Man. In this study I will ultimately prove that Basil perfectly echoes the Wildean artist and Henry, the critic. Lastly, with the “corruption” element in the portrait and the death of Dorian, I also argue that Wilde not only affirm the supremacy of Art over criticism, but also elucidates his opinion on Beauty, which is the union of an eternal element with a transient one.
