歷史性都心區面臨歷史保存與當代開發的問題，如何保存歷史特質又能允許適當的新開發，本研究致力於找尋這兩者間的中間彈性可能新型態。首先最根本的問題:要保存的歷史是什麼? 本研究不是單體歷史建築的原樣保護，而是歷史區域中的「歷史特質」的維護。運用都市組織與歷史特質的理論基礎來分析與釐清歷史特質，歷史就在於紋理上，而紋理即是虛體元素中的地塊群體，經過台南都市組織分析後，本研究認為大天后宮街廓的歷史特質為「沿街生活的地面層延續原有紋理」，小宗地塊切割韻律、沿街量體人性尺度退縮。

過往的台南保存研究多數是維持原有形貌為主，不贊成新開發在舊市區，但本研究認為在保有歷史特質狀況下，可以容許適當的新開發讓台南的舊紋理也能容納更多的使用量。在當代開發的層面下，除了維護歷史特質，有些與時俱進的議題需考量到歷史街廓新型態的操作，從社會與彈性空間、混合使用的生活紋理，到生態支持，這些不同面向的議題搭配，更彈性的產權使用，讓在地居民原地居住的同時，釋出更多居住空間能讓不同人口族群進駐到舊市區，為舊市區注入新的活力。

本研究所操作出的歷史街廓新型態在形式上有些異同，但是其歷史本質是一致的。這些新型態並不是標準範本，而是挑戰不同面向的議題，探索更多歷史保存與當代開發下的彈性可能，展示了多樣的未來可能的想像願景 ，提供歷史街廓新的歷史保存與當代開發可能方向與參考。

Nowadays the center of historic cities has been facing the issue of the preservation and development. The purpose of the research aims to find the possibility of harmonizing conserving and developing. Applying Kropf's theory of "Urban tissue and the character of towns" in the research to clarify historic character and combine other issues, such as flexible uses under social concerns as well as eco-greening. The new development types in the research are not the best answer, nor are they the standard norms. The development types show a variety of possible future visions, providing the Grand Matsu Temple quarter the possibility and reference of harmonizing conserving and developing.
