Celeste Ng's debut novel, Everything I Never Told You, revolves around the story of an interracial family in 1970s United States. With the death of a mixed-race teenage girl, Lydia Lee, the novel uncovers the sophisticated issues of sexism and racism Marilyn and James, Lydia's parents, encounter. Due to the deep-rooted sexism and racism in American culture, Marilyn fails to become a physician whereas James fails to be accepted by the mainstream society. Their failures to fulfill their dreams deeply influence their parenting practices. Marilyn highly expects Lydia to excel in the scientific field and James hopes Lydia to assimilate into American culture, yet their high expectations lead to Lydia's death. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore why Lydia, a biracial teenage girl, commits suicide in 1970s United States. Examining the novel from the intersectional approach, I suggest that racism and sexism in the 1950s United States continue to act as interlocking systems of oppression that influence Lydia's self-development. As a pleasing daughter in the family and a loner in school, Lydia struggles under parental expectations as well as social isolation. She eventually loses her selfhood. Her final dying moment ironically serves as the only way she demonstrates her autonomy. With the increasing number of interracial family and biracial children, this thesis provides a lens for readers to understand the challenges and struggles of mixed-race families and biracial children in contemporary society.
