The subject of this essay is about the power of Madame de Pompadour at the court of Louis XV. As one of the most famous mistresses of Louis XVs’, Madame de Pompadour owned the title of maîtresse en titre (chef mistress), which caused the royal family and the nobles as the party of the dévot accused her of “adultery” with the King. Facing the unfriendly and even hostile environment at court, Madame de Pompadour tried to consolidate her position by mécénat, supporting the artistes by donation to show her artistic favors and intelligent thoughts. In the 1750’s, her weak health led to the end of intimacy with the King, Madame de Pompadour redefined their relationship from love to friendship, which made her position more stable than before. Her growing influence at court made it possible for her to interfere foreign policy, her favorite part of the politics, which caused the Diplomatic Revolution and influenced the whole Continent.
In this essay, both researches and historical materials, like letters of Madame de Pompadour, were used. Researches for fine-arts, music, architecture…etc. help us to know how many aspects of art were involved and influenced by Madame de Pompadour. While the letters written by Madame de Pompadour to the ministers are the best proof to her power, her thoughts in politics and foreign affair.
The result of this research is that Madame de Pompadour is not just a mere beautiful mistress. Not only did she found her artistic taste at court, but stretch her power and influence to the politics and foreign affair. Finally, she fulfilled her goal as a powerful woman and femme savante at the court of Louis XV.
