大湄公河次區域經濟合作是全球化和區域一體化加快發展的產物，亦是區域合作和區域經濟一體化發展的補充，大湄公河次區域經濟合作發軔於東南亞地區並蓬勃發展，越來越具有特色。到目前為止，提到區域合作時，人們經常把歐盟視為地區合作的典範，因此如何用科學的眼光來正確看待及解釋次區域經濟合作的這種新趨勢，如何運用國際關係理論來研究越南參與大湄公河次區域經濟合作的過程，將啟發我們從另外一個角度了解大湄公河次區域主義的特色，並對次區域主義等國際合作理論發展做探索。
本文採用國際政治經濟學研究方法，以區域化、區域主義及次區域主義理論為理論框架，對越南參與大湄公河次區域經濟合作進程進行全面考察，大湄公河次區域經濟合作對促進越南經濟發展和維護國家安全發揮著重大的影響力。因此，從20世紀90年代大湄公河次區域經濟合作機制成立以來，越南一直積極參與所有領域的合作，大湄公河次區域經濟合作給越南帶來利益的同時，也面臨著不少嚴峻挑戰。本文將系統性地回顧大湄公河次區域經濟合作的發展歷程、分析大湄公河次區域經濟合作的發展方向並總結越南參與大湄公河次區域經濟合作的挑戰，探討越南與區域內國家甚至是區域外國家如何於競爭環境中又能相互協調合作。

The economic cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion has been largely accelerated economic development in the area though the acceleration of globalization as well as regionalization. These two have also been complemented by regional cooperation and economic integration. The economic cooperation in this part of Southeast Asia has become more and more refined. As things stand, the European Union has more than frequently been used as a model for regional cooperation. With this in mind, research scholars using this model, have been able to correctly explain the new trend that’s on the rise, that is regional economic cooperation. Through the application of international relations theory, the study seeks to investigate Vietnam’s participation in the Greater Mekong Subregion regional economic cooperation. This will contribute another angle that will help to understand and explore the development of regionalism, the theory of international cooperation in greater detail and better understand the regionalization characteristics taking shape in this region in discussion.
This study applies research methods used in international economics, the theory of regionalization, regionalism as well as sub-regional concepts as its theoretical framework to analyze Vietnam’s role in participating in the Greater Mekong Subregion economic cooperation. The article conducts a comprehensive inspection and searches out the influence of the sub-regional cooperation towards the maintained economic development of Vietnam and its significance to its national security.
Although there are many challenges to this sub-regional cooperation that was established in the early 1990s, Vietnam has been actively involved and in turn Vietnam has benefited immensely from the Greater Mekong Subregional cooperation.
The article goes to great lengths to review the progress of the Greater Mekong Subregional economic cooperation analyzing the course of development, evaluating the economic cooperation and its challenges. The article also investigates the circumstances that condition the environment for competition and cooperation between Vietnam and the countries within and outside this area of cooperation.
